House prices up 3.6 per cent in 12 months

Home prices across Australia's five major capital cities have risen 3.6 per cent over the past year, but on a weekly basis, they've fallen 0.2 per cent.

In the week to January 21, Sydney's home values dropped 0.4 per cent compared to the previous week, while Melbourne's fell 0.1 per cent and Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth's prices were steady, property group CoreLogic's indicate.

Median house prices for private treaty sales, rather than auctions, were $815,000 in Sydney, $680,000 in Melbourne, $525,000 in Brisbane, $495,000 in Perth, and $440,000 in Adelaide.
