Approvals for the construction of new homes rose 11.7 per cent in November, beating market expectations of a one per cent decline.
Approvals for private sector houses were down 2.0 per cent in the month, and the 'other dwellings' category, which includes apartment blocks and townhouses, was 30.6 per cent higher.
Over the 12 months to November, building approvals were up 17.1 per cent, the Australian Bureau of Statistics said on Tuesday.
